So if you know me, you know how much I love baseball. I wholeheartedly believe that life begins on opening day. Well, it's October now, which means we are in the midst of the playoffs. Being a Cubs fan, that usually means nothing. But this year, they are IN! Thanks to social media, there are some great hostages surrounding the team. #FlyTheW seems to have caught on the most. Yes, I own a W flag and display it proudly after they win (when I remember). We took this photo last week after the Cubs downed the Cardinals to make it to the NLCS. I created the page right away, but due to cloudy weather, wasn't able to photo is until yesterday.

I knew Doodlebug had new sports lines coming out, but was told they weren't arriving in stores until November. I was thrilled when I walked into my LSS to find a huge display! I bought all of the baseball, 3 times over, and used it all up!

Now, here is  my page based on our sketch. If you know me, I'm a rule breaker. So, I wanted to play with the oversize background shape, but still keep the integrity of the sketch. So I did!  I cut the oversize award ribbon, but used it more as a title block than background. Covering it up would have defeated the purpose. I definitely changed the shape of the design by using two portrait photos as well.  But, as you can see, the rest of the sketch is there.

We were at my son's swim team banquet. Of course as soon as we walked in, I was a stranger to him. Butter he received his certificate, I received that text from him. It made my night. Although he is a teen and wants to distance himself from his parents, he thought enough to share his news and excitement with me in a subtle way. My how technology can work in our favor sometimes. The journaling is a message back to him reminding him to keep feeling what he felt in that moment.

Hello! I have here today the newest challenge at Picture This. Are you ready?

2 PHOTOS + POLKA DOTS + FAMILY

Two photos, no problem. Polka dots, also no problem and this page is all about family.  I actually ket the polka dots in the background. Literally. It's the red background paper. The banner is also polka dots. I used a bunch of 3x4 cards from a family themed collection to create the quilted matte under the photos. It another nod to the theme of the page.  Add some embellishments  that also speak to family and the page is complete. 

I chose a sketch from Boys Rule Scrapbooking as the design of the page. I used full 4x6 photos so the entire layout design is extended. I love the end result.

I love these photos and will probably scrap them again so I can tell a different story. For now know that these are the last photos of my son and Grandfather together. I look at them with joy and sadness at the same time. For the most part, that's what the journaling says.

Hollah for Challah

Good morning! It's Tuesday, and on the Get It Scrapped blog is a new article in the speed up your scrapping series. Today's topic is creating 2 page layouts using different backgrounds on each side. 

I make 2 page layouts often, but I use the same paper background on both sides. This was a good exercise for me.  I chose two basic prints, dots and stripes and added some large floral prints, reminiscent of my Grandma's house. I united the two sides by adding strips of the stripe and floral papers to the bottom of the right page. I repeated the colors with embellishments on both pages.

My friends and I got together one afternoon to bake challah. I hadn't done it since I was a little girl. Not only did we have fun, I was reminded how easy it is to do. We've already talked about getting together again this fall for round two.

Say Cheese, Please?

Good morning! Today I am sharing a page that is part of today's article on the Get It Scrapped blog : Favorite approaches to creating pages with 4x6 photos. 

This is a "go to" design I use when I have a 2 photo page, with one portrait and a landscape photo. By adding a small amount of paper, I create a block. From there I can embellish minimally or boldly. In this case I chose minimally and with choices that reinforce the story. 

I have used this design multiple times, and I can tell you, none of the pages look the same. It really is amazing what a few different papers or color scheme make.

These photos were taken on Father's Day. All we wanted was one decent picture, without smirks, or closed eyes and with everyone in the photo. We didn't get any of it, and it's a reminder to myself that this is our family, and sometimes I just have to take what I can get.

Now, on to today's sketch and layout reveal. Here is the sketch. I like it! It's different!

Here is my page. I kept the idea of the sketch, but adjusted the size of the angles. Want to know how the page began? With the small triangle scrap of the pink striped paper. From there I cut more of that paper, then just kept going with more prints and colors from the same collection. I balanced the colors and the size of the prints to make it all work together. I chose these papers because of the game piece die cuts. I was so excited to use them!

While visiting family this summer, we spent an evening playing a game together.  My husband really got into it, becoming silly and competitive. In order to win, he started talking to the dice and "channeling them" to roll the right numbers. you know what? It worked! That made the night even funnier, and my husband more competitive!

Hey there! Wow. October 1st already! I know I keep saying this but where does the time go??? I say that as I have been working on photos from 2010, which doesn't seem that long ago. Anyway, let's get to today's reveal at Picture This Challenges:

3 Photos + Chipboard + Stamps

Three photos are never a problem for me. I have a hard time choosing and editing photos. I grabbed a template from the Get It Scrapped Half and Half Scrapbook Coach lesson for some help in page design. The frame and larger alpha are chipboard. I stamped in the middle of my journaling.  I chose some high energy papers and embellishments to help tell the story. I originally was going to stamp on raw chipboard. I got carried away, in a totally different direction, but I am so happy with the way it turned out.

As the journaling reads: This is one of those "oh, look what he can do! Oh crap, look what he can do!" moments. I left the room for a moment and came back to this. He is my ever curious, daredevil, no fear, child. I would have it any other way.

Portillo's and/or BUST

Hey there! I'm up on the Get It Scrapped blog today, sharing a I page I made using pocket page cards on a traditional layout. This arctic le is part of this month's membership eBook class Pocket Page design.

I chose 3x4, 3x3 and a few 1x4 pocket cards from a travel themed collection to create a diverse layered matte for my photos. The cards are placed so there is movement around the whole page. I used a travel themed paper collection, and selected cards with sayings that could be interpreted with a double meaning, giving the page a playful feel. 

Portillo's is one of our favorite restaurants in Chicago. When my son found out there was one where we were vacationing, he asked to eat there every meal.  We didn't go for every meal, but I hoe the 4 times we did go satisfied his craving for a while.

Ice Ice baby

Good morning. Wow. mid September already. I guess I better start thinking about fall. I keep thinking it's still summer. Well, regardless, It's time for a new challenge at Picture This and I did create a very summery layout for this challenge:

Sunburst + 2 photos + buttons

This is labor of love. All. That. Stitching. But it was my own choice. Yes, the colors are bright, but it needed some texture. I took my color cue from the sign in the photo. The sunburst is so bold, I kept the embellishing to a minimum. I used the arrows pointed to focus on the photos. And then there is the title, but what would one of my pages be without  some humor in it? Looking for buttons? I used a small flair button. How's that for thinking outside the box?

We are so fortunate to have family that lives in So. California. It's a summer destination every year. I love dawdling down he small main street either by myself or with my son. This is a little local coffee join t I frequent when we visit. This day, he noticed the sign for shave ice and asked for one. Who am I to say no? But he's so funny. He says that the best part is not the first few bites. It's when the ice has melted a little and you get into the bowl where all the syrup is. ok then. Enjoy buddy!

All in for MAMBI

Well, hello! I know,  I have neglected my blog for the past 2 weeks.  I have to say this has been the toughest start to the school year ever. We are heading into week 3, and I'm ready to settle into my routine now. 

Anyway, today I have 3 special pages to share especially made for the Me and My Big Ideas (MAMBI) Design Team call.  Why especially made? When I went through my stash, I found I didn't have as much MAMBI as I'd thought, so I went out to buy some new stuff to play with. That's when I I remembered why I didn't have very much.  My LSS doesn't carry a lot. I bought a nice selection of stickers and embellishments in a variety of themes and went to work.  Boy did I have fun. 

I love using product in unexpected ways to create meaning in fun ways. Another thing I like to do is to infuse humor into my pages. This first one is a perfect example of that. It's also a scrap lift of a page by Kelly Feldman of Paper Issues. I loved the idea of the pieces along the sides of the page. I immediately thought of the MAMBI motivational stickers I bought. I used them to create a page about, and for my son. The page is fun, quirky, and meaningful all at the same time.

This second one is also a message to my son on his birthday this year. I used the Happy Birthday MAMBI stickers, and took the colors from them to choose my papers. I like to layer both papers and embellishments. I was able to do both here. I think the sticker set is fun and not too serious. I was able make the page have the same feeling.

Here is another example of me using product in unexpected ways to create fun and meaning. I took a MAMBI chalkboard style 'girl' friend sticker set to show the relationship between my son and our dog. Again, I took my product cue from the color in the stickers., I chose to stay with black and white so I could highlight both the photo and the wonderfully bright stickers. I mixed in some epoxy puffy stickers to add more color and different shapes. The MAMBI glitter alphas were the shiny finishing touch it needed. Well, maybe the 'punny' title is the finishing touch.

What's Owl The Buzz About

my, oh my, Happy September to you. It is a very happy day around here. For me anyway. It's the first day of school! I'll take those early mornings in exchange or a bit of routine for all of us. Oh, a new month also means a new challenge at Picture This.  This challenge is :

2 photos + green + white + black

I think I'll do a Halloween page. I LOVE Halloween. Really. And I love scrapping the photos even more. Bright colors, creepy critters, silly critters, but always smiling faces.  All of those can be mixed together as I've done here. Spider webs? Creepy. Monsters with mustaches? Silly. Photos? Definitely happy. Bright colors mixed into the green, black and white? Easily done. 

My parents came for a visit and got to experience Halloween in all the ways, school parties and parades as well as Trick or Treating. I'm not sure who enjoyed this more, my son or my parents. Regardless, these are the first of several pages of this particular Halloween.

Sunglasses

I'm pretty sure this is my last post for August. I don't see much time today or tomorrow for any new projects. What that really means though is that I participated in every challenge I wanted to this month!  Today's page is inspired by the August sketch at Boys Rule Scrapbooking kits and Paper Issues free Printables.  

My family must have an odd thing for sunglasses. I caught him playing with mine and trying to figure out how to put them on the right way. He played with them for a while until he got it right. His smile shows how proud he was of himself.

I liked that this sketch has several layers. I like playing with papers and this enabled me to do that.  I chose to keep the edges straight on all the papers. When I saw the printable, I knew I had to use it. it became an extra visible layer, instead of tucked under.

A Walk with Tin Foil Man

Im back! More to share today, taking advantage of a quiet, rainy morning here. I have 2 more pages to share, both inspired by Stuck?! Sketches. Did you see they are having a DT call? Yep, I may have to apply. I find their sketches are designed well and easy to use. I can adapt them to to my style, or use them exactly as they are. I don't usually do one post for both challenges, but, well, today I am.

First up:

Oh, I had fun with this one. I enlarged the photo area with both the size of my photos and the layers beneath them. I have to admit, I started by wanting to use the washi at the top of the page, the colors and papers were selected based on that.  Because the papers all go together, I added some detail to he edge of the papers to give them some definition. I usually ink the edges, but wanted to try something different. The darker color of the title alphas and the page corners, keep the focus on the center of the page. 

I do like how the colors reflect a bright spring day. The walk to the park was more about the journey itself, than being at the park. I think it took almost 30 min to walk the 2 blocks. He was so interested in looking at everything around him.

Next up:

I played with this one a bit more by flipping it on it's side.  I used a journal card and a larger photo, and moved the small banners to the top as an entry into the page. I love creating energy on my pages. The falling stars do just that. Truth? I dropped them and they landed like that. A very happy accident. My favorite thing about this page? Being able to use the sports elements from the ephemera pack! Neither of my boys play team sports. The fact that his PJ's have a sports theme? Bonus!   

So, humor is something else that's always on my pages. In this case, the 'Sorry Not Sorry' as well as the title cater to that.  One night after cleaning up from dinner, my son decided he was fascinated with e tin foil wrapped loaf of bread. He held it for a long time, then tried to leave the table with it, He even tried to take it to bed. He was even smart enough to recognize that the foil wrapped tupperware,we gave him instead,  was not the same! Since then, every time we warm bread in foil, he does the same thing. But only with bread. Tin Foil Man indeed.

Green Bananas & Shenanigans

Hey there. I have so much going on here today. Nothing like waiting until the last minute. But, well, it's still summer at my house which means lots of time with my children, not so much time with my crafty supplies, let alone blogging. So here goes. These pages are inspired by both August challenges at Scrap Our Stash

First up is the PAPER stash challenge. (Now I remember why I waited so long to write the post. I wanted to retake the photo. Forgive the poor editing ;-) )

In our family, we like to make jokes about each others' silly quirks. In this case, it's my husband's  preference to eat only almost green bananas. No spots, not really yellow. Pretty much green. My son took it upon himself to snap this photo while the two of them were out shopping.  As I was searching for product to use, I remembered I had this Bella Blvd collection. The saying on one of the papers was perfect. I painted the words I wanted to highlight. The combination of yellow and green help tell the story as well. 

Anyway, I used Polka Dots, Alphas & arrows, Paint (I painted the words green), Echo Park (the green background paper) and 3 tiny black Rhinestones.

Next is the sketch + stash challenge

 I played around with the sketch a little by using triangles in place of the rectangular shapes. The rest of the design is fairly evident. I used stripes, Simple Stories and paint/mist.  I liked using a dog themed line mixed with colors and patterns from another line. The result is lighthearted and fun, like the photo.  Some Paper Issues Swag Bag pieces and Printables made their way onto the page, as well as inspiration from the August Pinspire me board. 

Again, my son is showing me his sense of humor. Self Timer Shenanigans indeed. I left my phone at home while I went shopping. I came home to a giggling boy, who couldn't keep this to himself.  "mom, check your phone". So I did. He knows that if he does silly things, especially with my phone, it's going to go public at some point.  He didn't mind this time, and I love seeing him be silly.

Photo Op

Hey there. A new article has been posted on the Get It Scrapped blog. Today's ideas feature a sketch, adapted from a layout created by  Noell Hyman  for the Get It Scrapped Membership.

I liked the diagonal flow of this sketch, and the idea of steps going up from the bottom left to the top right of the page. It also gave me a chance to play with layering, which Ive really been enjoying lately.

This page is part of a series from my Grandfather's 90th Birthday party at Dodger Stadium.  We were part of the pre-game activities. As a result, we were able to take some family photos on the field before he game started. 

Sketches are a great way to combat creative block as well as learn some design skills. There are several creative team examples in this article.

Hello Fall

Hey there! It's time for the mid month reveal at Picture This. This time around, we are asking that you use these elements:

2 photos + monochromatic + fall colors

Well, let me tell you. I found this to be challenging indeed! I think I got too much into my own head though. I would find a photo, then realize I needed 2 photos. Or choose a color, and again only find one photo. Finally, I landed on these photos that I took on a morning walk last fall. Brown was an easy choice. It's a great neutral to help the color in the photos shine.

The polka dots give the page some pattern. I embossed the dark brown card stock with a floral motif to go with the outdoor theme of the page. The wood leaves and splattered paint, again enhance the theme.

Just Go

Hey there! I'm up on the Get It Scrapped blog today. This newest article is discussing a two-page layout that is "bracketed" by something at far right and something at far left.   I often create 2 page layouts. When I do, I am usually conscious about balance and flow, but not necessarily if I "bracket" my photos.  I love learning something new, so I was ready for this assignment.

My son is going into the ocean by himself for the first time. He was both afraid and excited at the same time. I took a series of photo of him getting in, turning around to see that I was there, then finally enjoying himself. 
 
I used the bracket idea in two ways. First, I repeated the diamond patterned paper in a more traditional way, on both outer edges of the layout. I also repeated the color red on both sides of the layout, but is it more prominent on the left side. I used red as an accent on the right side. The result is a visual triangle of red across the two pages.

House hunting

Hello there. Its August. Wow. Well, a new month means a new challenge at Picture This. the challenge elements are

one photo + 2 patterned papers + black background

And here you go: I used a textured cardstock base. I used both sides of one piece pf patterned paper as my two patterns. the rest are journaling cards, stickers, and die cuts.  I used the wood numbers not only to work the flow around the page, bt also to represent the amount of houses that we looked at.

We spent hours and hours over there course of two weekends looking for a house for our move. Somehow, he still had a smile on his face. Maybe he was looking at the listing of the house we bought.  

Design inspiration for this page comes from the July Sketch At Boys Rule Scrapbook Kits. I replaced the round objects for the squared journal tags, and moved the embellishment cluster from the bottom to the top.

Anchor's Away

For my page, I used one of the printable that Danielle created for this issue. I got so excited when I saw the large anchor. My sister and son went on a nautical adventure last summer and this gave me several ideas.  I grabbed the Fancy Pants Making Waves collection. I knew there was a deep navy and some anchors in there too. (By the way, anchors are something I didn't see my self being able to use. Glad I was able to change that.) I also grabbed a few die cuts from last years Fancy Pants Nautical Collection. The page name together quickly. I cut the title on the Silhouette and that was it.

Yes, these two had quite the adventure. They were treated to a day aboard the USS Spruance Naval Destroyer last summer during Navy Days. They toured the ship, learned it's history, and even ate with the sailors. That is something special to remember.

Life's a Beach

Good Saturday to you! I'm back for my 6th post this week! and I'm not done yet! Today I am sharing what I made using the July free cut file from Paper Issues. Her are this month's cuts.

I cut the "Beach Life' and added an 's' from one of the other cuts. Since all the 'a's were welded, I found a font close to this one and voila, "life's a beach'! I was playing around with photo filters when I took this photo a few years ago. Because it is washed out, I surrounded it with the bright saturated colors of the Fancy pants Making Waves collection, so it would stand out.  

This was the first time I had seen him reality relax and enjoy being at the beach. I think he was finally old enough to know its ok to chill out and enjoy the warn sand and cool surf. 

Design inspiration for this page comes from a great Let's Get Sketchy sketch, as well as Scrap Our Stash for their PHOTOS challenge this month. I used Polka dots, Heidi Swapp mist, orange, twine, October afternoon Flair and Silhouette.
