Baseball, Hot Dogs & Apple Pie

Sunday, May 25, 2014

Good Morning on this fine Memorial Day.  Seeing as it is Monday, that means there's a new sketch challenge up at Let's Get Sketchy.

Another fantastic sketch from the talented Laura Whitaker, but one, I have to say, that took me well out of my comfort zone.  I like my 4x6 photos all grouped together. I had a difficult time making this sketch feel cohesive to me. While I was working on it , I felt like it was disconnected. Don't get me wrong, I love how others can use sketches like this and create beautiful pages. For me it was a challenge, but I embraced it and am actually happy I did.

This page is all about me, my love of Baseball, and celebrating it's Opening Day.  We celebrate opening day every year with the same meal: hot dogs, fries, peanuts, with Baby Ruth candy bars and apple pie for dessert.  All of the word stickers are a play on that fact. The colors are bright, the background is playful and full of energy. I used the arrows and the stitched outline to help move the eye around the page. They were the last elements I added, and made me feel like the page was connected, and flowed together.

I hope you will give this sketch a try this week at Let's Get Sketchy.. Challenge yourself. You may be surprised with the results.

The Path

Wednesday, May 21, 2014

Good Morning. It is my turn to reveal at Scrap Stuff'z Inspired by today.  First I'll show you the inspiration photo.

When I fist looked at the photo, I immediately saw circles. Then I changed my entire train of thought. Here is what came from the photo. In a very round about way....

I made a decision earlier this month that I am only going to work on Bar Mitzvah photos this month. It's been almost a year and the album is not finished.  I knew it would be a challenge to have a project in mind combined with this particular assignment.  I took a second (third, fourth) look at the inspiration photo. This time I saw shapes within shapes. More philosophically, I saw a path, like the path my son took to his Bar Mitzvah.

I did use a Scrapbook Generation Sketch. I chose to use arrows. They represent a path. I stamped images onto small squares, shaped within shapes. I did also use buttons as circles.  the corrugated paper has texture like the mulch on the ground.

So there you have it. My somewhat deep translation of the photo to the page. Head over to Scrap Stuff'z Inspired by and link up your project over there.

Heritage and more

Monday, May 19, 2014

See, I said I had more to hare this week. Thanks for coming back.  Today I have 2 LO's to share so I will make this brief and to the point.

My Scraps & More Sketches Sketch #80

I found this as yet another great sketch to help me on this long journey to complete the Bar Mitzvah album

I loved the vertical lines in the photo so I played that up on the page. There is a layered die cut vellum over the corrugated paper. i cut 'fringe' into the strips of paper, then added a thin strip of paper horizontally to give the page some balance. Again, keeping the details simple, the page came out nicely.

Next up is a page for Scrap Our Stash. Something older, newer, fussy cut and blue...

Here it is. The 6 months or older is the card stock, "and the" word stickers and the mist. Newer in the last 6 months are the patterned papers. Fussy cut is the chevron paper, and well, blue is kind of all over the page and in the photos.

I took these while we were on vacation last month. He had a rough day and the blanket came with us everywhere. He decided he wouldn't walk without it, so I draped it over his shoulder. Pretty much don't care who heard or saw me laughing because the title for this page came to me while standing there, camera in hand...

Glad you stopped by today. I still have more to share this week, so check back again!

Friends

Sunday, May 18, 2014

Oh the joy of an hour stolen on a weekend day. I snuck up to my room, sat at my desk, and quickly, got this page together. It helps though, when I have a starting point.  I started with this sketch from Boys Rule Scrapbook Kits and the product choices from Scrap & Play for the Word Play challenge, use products for each letter in the word FLOWERS

I am still working on the Bar Mitzvah album, so this is another one checked off the list. The sketch was perfect. I am trying to keep things simple. I reversed the side of the page because the people in the photo are facing the other way. I made a layered banner to give the page some interest and added a snippet of paper in the corner. What an easy sketch to translate!

As for product, F-Fancy Pants, L-layers of papers, O-Orange card stock, W-wood veneer, E-enamel dots, R-recycled paper (the journaling that is hidden under the clip is written on the cardboard from the packaging of the enamel dots) and/or rectangle shaped photo, S-sequins

Thanks for looking at my creative view today. I have more stuff to share this week so come back again.

Supplies: CS-Bazzill, PP, clip & buttons-Fancy Pants, Wood venner-Studio Calico, word sticker-Jillibean Soup, ink-VersaMagic, twine & enamel dots-MME, sequins-Studio Calcio, Michaels.

Wise Words

Tuesday, May 13, 2014

I'm still in the midst of LOAD. I'm not posting all of the completed LO's this time around.  A few days ago, I changed my whole approach to LOAD. I've had all the photos from my son's Bar Mitzvah all organized and ready to go. They have been staring me in the face. i've done a few pages here and there, but I really want to finish. So, as much as I love the theme and all of the prompts in this months LOAD, I decided to work on the Bar Mitzvah album instead. I've already given myself permission to do a page a day right?

So on to today's page. There is a new challenge blog in town, Scrap and Play.  The first challenge is a sketch

I found this to be a great sketch to use for one of the pages in this current project.

I used a single 4x6 photo instead of the two smaller ones. All of the pages in this album are on the simpler side, so I treated this one the same, with small details and clusters of embellishments. This sketch lent itself well to this idea.

Thanks for stopping by today. Check back again later this week for more of my creative view.

Happy Birthday

Sunday, May 11, 2014

No, it's not my birthday, or anyone else in my family's today. But that is part of the title of the LO I have to share today. It is Monday, which means it's reveal day at Let's Get Sketchy. We had a great sketch to use and I had a lot of fun working with it.

2009 was an odd year for us. It was filled with many unexpected challenges, many ups & downs. We took advantage of reasons to celebrate. What a better way to celebrate a birthday than taking in a Cubs game on a warm fall evening. The only thing that could have made the night better was if we had gotten a photo of the birthday message on the scoreboard. Oh well, and excuse to do it again.

I've been having a lot of fun tilting elements on my pages. Why not tilt the entire photo matte? It works. The photos are placed so they are looking at each other. Tilting the strips at the top and bottom  add to the effect as well s pull the focus onto the photos. The papers have a lot going on, so embellishments are minimal, but visible.

I hope to see your entries this week at Let's Get Sketchy. Thanks for stopping to take a look at my creative view. I'll be back several times this week sharing more projects I've been working on.

Sick Pup

Wednesday, May 7, 2014

Hi there! It's reveal day at Child's Play Challenges. This week it's time for a Classic TV Challenge

One of my favorites as a child. Confession? If my boys are watching, I will sit and watch with them too.

ok, I could have done Halloween, but today, my LO is about our dog. Definitely related to Scooby right? Ruh Roh, he was sick and we took care of him. We were so worried! He'd never been sick before!

The papers are from a kit I received from a monthly class at my LSS. They were vey bold, so I kept the LO really simple. I do like the red as a contrast. I takes the photos stand out.

I hope you will head over to  Child's Play Challenges and join us in the Classic TV Challenge.

Scrappy Fridays

Friday, May 2, 2014

That's my new thing. Well, not really new, I just gave it a name. I've been reserving Fridays as my Scrap Day for a while. Today I begin blogging about what I do on Scrappy Fridays.  So here goes.

LOAD began yesterday. Layout a Day. Why do I do this? It gives me an excuse to take time for ME each and every day. So, for the months that I participate in LOAD, I scrap a bit more and read a bit less.  Today I did not follow the prompt and instead did my own thing.

We recently went to Hawaii. Our family's first time there. This is us just after arriving. 12 hours of travel, 3 hour time change, but still smiles on our faces. Most of our faces anyway. I used sketch #18 form the My Scraps & More April Sketch-a-Thon. Have you been over there? Their site is fantastic. Lots of inspiration.  I changed it up a bit by using a larger photo. The title and embellishments are moved as a result. Great sketch, easy to use.

I also used some stuff from the JBS Mercantile April kit. I wanted to see what everyone was raving about, so I decided to check it out and purchase a kit. Good mix of papers, even things I can't get at my LSS.  I like the exclusive stuff, but I don't see the need to subscribe at this time.

Supplies-JBS Mercantile April kit papers, Wood-Citrus twist, Studio Calico, Freckled Fawn, sequins-Citrus Twist, Doodlebug Designs, alpha and clips-Freckled Fawn, Washi-October Afternoon, stamp-Kate Spade, enamel dots-MME, mist-Studio Calico

Next. This makes me smile.

I am working on the photos of my son's bar Mitzvah. Slowly but steadily, I am making progress. This bis an absolute favorite photo. It is so rare to get a beautiful photo of them together. Pretty much nothing else needs to be said.

I used sketch # 79 from My Scraps & More.  I  used a larger photo, so I change the orientation of the papers, moved the title, created my own place for embellies. A cool sketch to use and can see myself using it again.

Thanks for stopping by. More new things to come as I attempt to create a Layout a Day, or as we say at Get it Scrapped, a Page a Day

Supplies: CS-Bazzill, PP, die cuts, buttons & brads-Theresa Collins, Wood-Studio Calico, AC, twine & washi-MME, clip-Freckled Fawn, bling Queen & Co, mist-tattered angels
